Maria Cornejo Unveils Her New Line of Textiles for Knoll Luxe
Maria Cornejo—that famed purveyor of pretty, printed frocks and angular-minded outerwear—will not rest until she has made your home a little bit more chic. “I love textures and patterns and the mixture of things that are very luxurious but also very modern—I think that was the attraction,” says the designer, who unveils her new collaboration with Knoll Luxe this week. The collection, Knoll’s fourth with a fashion designer (previous iterations were with Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, and Suno) takes its inspiration both from Cornejo’s previous collections and her photography, and offers a distinct blend of what the designer dubs her own “eclectic, urban, quite nomadic and almost folk-like” aesthetic. (Time spent living and working in New York, Paris, London, and Tokyo doesn’t hurt, either.) The heavy wool Ita printed fabric came from Scottish mills and an iPhone picture of New York pavement; the Metallic Gloss took its inspiration from slicked city streets; the Cloud drapery from a blurred personal photograph; the Digi Velvet from France, where it was also produced. “We’re tapping into each country for what their strongest thing is,” says Cornejo. “Each fabric tells a story.”
And as these things often turn out, some of the furniture-intended textiles have inspired her in a way not entirely expected—which is to say, a sort of nod to Scarlett O’Hara. “The big fringe is probably one of my favorites, this mad fringed drapery. It could easily be a dress!” Cornejo says, with a laugh. “It’s quite sexy in a way, quite sensual, these textiles. They’re begging to be touched. And I think that’s what people want right now, they want things that touch them in some way.” We’re willing to bet that she’s on to something.
