A Case for the Furry Collar: The Chicest Coats Come Finished With a Soft Touch This Fall

This fall, it seems that the truly chic are sticking their necks out for an embellished collar. Take Vogue Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany, whose Sandy Liang leather moto jacket and cotton candy dyed-fur contrasting collar has caused ripples of envy through the office. “I’d been looking at my motorcycle leather jackets, and felt plain bored by them all,” says Zalopany. “Especially this fall, when the collections were brimming with coats full of personality from Marni and Prada. The embellished collar helps decorate a classic silhouette without going overboard.” And it is not just Zalopany who is sporting the trend. The X factor element on jackets has made appearances on Kate Moss, who adds a dimension of rock ’n’ roll to army green utility jackets and trench coats with a touch of fur, while at the London presentation the faux fur–focused brand Shrimps took mohair biker jackets to the next level, frosting them with faux-fur collars in powder blue or strawberry cream.

For those of us who have worn the same vintage leather jacket since high school, this oh so subtle nod to what’s happening on the runways is key―it feels au courant without getting outrageous, less trend-driven than a special detail on something otherwise standard. The smallest dash of quirk is a perfect seasonal pick-me-up for the wardrobe: a decorative tweak that gives a lick of contrast while adding a punch of personality. It instantly elevates a typically transitional jacket from standard to standout. “The fur or shearling collared jackets are exactly what you need to bundle up for chilly weather before it’s cold enough to break out your full-on coat,” says Vogue Market Editor Kelly Connor. “Throw it on with classic boots and jeans or over a romantic dress with a tougher shoe. The possibilities are endless, but you can rest assured that you will leave the house feeling warm but looking cool!”

So should a full fur coat seem too fussy, but that exhausted-looking moto jacket in your closet is a boring no-go, opt for embellishment around the neck this season. After all, sometimes standing out from the crowd only requires a pop of the collar. Here, our ten favorite takes on the look for fall.
